Published on 15 June 2019, Dhaka, Bangladesh: At present, most rankings depend on the combination of various indicators, covering research, teaching quality, and so forth. These indicators are thus weighted and standardized to the final overall score. Year after year, as waves of students prepare to the university graduate from high school, polytechnic institutions, Madrasha and their guardians think about the next step of their child's future education and face the question of where to attend university for higher study. All Universities in Bangladesh are mainly categorized into three different types:

  1. Public Universities (government owned and subsidized),
  2. private Universities (private sector owned universities), and
  3. International Universities (operated and funded by international organizations).

Establishment of private universities in Bangladesh was initiated after the institution of the Private University Act 1992 which was amended in 1998. At present, private universities are running under the private university Act 2010. Now there are 103 such universities that are operational in different divisions of the country.

Rank-1: North South University (NSU)

North South University (NSU) is the first private university of Bangladesh. The government of Bangladesh approved the establishment of North South University in 1992 under the Private University Act 1992. North South University was established by a group of philanthropists, industrialists, bureaucrats, and academics. The university's campus is at Bashundhara in Dhaka. The foundation of the campus was laid on January 30, 2003 by Begum Khaleda Zia. Classes started in the permanent campus from June 9, 2009. This campus can serve up to 15,000 students with amenities and facilities. It contains six buildings with three basements on six acres of land having 665,000 square feet of floor space. The number of students at the university is about 20000 and the number of faculty members is about 830. At present Prof. Atique Islam is working as a Vice-Chancellor of the University. NSU has a rich library with total collection of books about 50,000.00. The laboratories of NSU are also well equipped with modern equipment.

BRAC University (BRACU) was established in 2001 under the private university act 1992.  BRACU was founded as a educational concern of the BRAC organization by Sir Fazle Hasan Abed in the year 2001  It follows the liberal arts approach to education which nurtures fresh ideas and gives new impetus in the field of tertiary education. It ensures a high quality of education and aims to meet the demands of contemporary times. BRAC University provides performance and merit based scholarship for its students. BRAC University present campus is situated at Mohakhali, Dhaka and its permanent campus at Merul Badda over 5 acres and it is expected to open in 2000. The construction work is rapidly going on. The university has decided to shift to permanent campus in 2021. BRAC University has about 9800 students and 600 faculty members. Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) is one of the oldest, largest and finest private universities in Bangladesh and its permanent campus is in Bashundhara R/A, Dhaka, Bangladesh. The university was established in 1993 by the Private University Act, 1992. Dr. M Omar Rahman is the Vice-Chancellor of the University. East West University Bangladesh is a private university in Dhaka, Bangladesh. It is one of the oldest private universities in Banglsdesh. East West University was established in 1996 as a non-profit organization.  East West University permanent campus is located in Aftabnagar, Rampura, Dhaka close to Bangladesh Television. The campus has 7.4 bighas of land. Total floor area of the 9 storied university complex is 4,58,957.04 square feet with modern facilities. Prof M. M. The Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology (AUST) was founded by the Dhaka Ahsania Mission in 1995. It maintains close collaboration with the University Grants Commission (UGC), Bangladesh and many other National and International Education Institutions and Professional bodies. The permanent Campus of the University has been built on 5-bighas (1.6 acres) of land at Tejgaon Industrial Area which is located in the heart of Dhaka City. United International University (UIU) is a private university located in Dhaka, Bangladesh, The government of Bangladesh approved the establishment of United International University in 2003 under the Private University Act -1992 (now replaced by-2010 ACT). Financial support came from the United Group, a Bangladeshi business conglomerate. The University has two campuses in Dhaka, both located in Dhanmondi, Dhaka. The UIU main Campus is built with the purpose of imparting education in a befitting infrastructure and congenial environment.
