The Universities in Bangladesh fall into three main categories: public (government-owned and subsidized), private (owned by the private sector), and international (operated and funded by organizations like the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation).
There are currently around 55 public universities and 113 operational private universities spread across various divisions of the country. While most universities offer a broad range of studies, encompassing fields like business, engineering, technology, humanities, and social sciences, some specialized institutions focus on specific areas. These include two dedicated to Islamic studies, two to agricultural science, one to healthcare science, one to veterinary medicine, and one to women’s studies.
The establishment of private universities in Bangladesh was initiated with the Private University Act of 1992. Since then, these institutions have played a significant role in expanding access to higher education, particularly in fields like engineering and technology.
Established in 1992 under the Private University Act, North South University (NSU) holds the distinction of being the first private university in Bangladesh. Founded by a group of philanthropists, industrialists, bureaucrats, and academics, NSU’s campus is located in Bashundhara, Dhaka.
The foundation for the campus was laid on January 30, 2003, by Begum Khaleda Zia, and classes commenced in the permanent campus on June 9, 2009. Spanning six acres of land with 665,000 square feet of floor space, the campus is designed to accommodate up to 15,000 students. It features six buildings, including three basements, providing a range of amenities and facilities.

5. Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology (AUST)
The Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology (AUST) was founded by the Dhaka Ahsania Mission in 1995. It maintains close collaboration with the University Grants Commission (UGC), Bangladesh and many other National and International Education Institutions and Professional bodies. The permanent campus of the University has been built on 5-bighas (1.6 acre) of land at Tejgaon Industrial Area, which is located in the heart of Dhaka City. The land use in this area is quickly changing from an industrial area to a commercial area.

6. American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB)

United International University (UIU) is a private university located in Dhaka, Bangladesh, The government of Bangladesh approved the establishment of United International University in 2003 under the Private University Act -1992 (now replaced by-2010 ACT). Financial support came from the United Group, a Bangladeshi business conglomerate.
The University has two campuses in Dhaka, both located in Dhanmondi, Dhaka.
