Universities in Bangladesh are mainly categorized into three different types: public (government-owned and subsidized), private (private sector owned universities), and international (operated and funded by international organizations such as the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation). Most universities focus on general studies, mixing together such areas of study as business, engineering, and technology. Seven universities have specialized curricula. Two of these are focused on Islamic studies, two on agricultural science, one on healthcare science, one on veterinary medicine, and one on women’s studies. The establishment of private universities in Bangladesh was initiated after the institution of the Private University Act 1992. Now there are 105 such universities that are operational in several divisions of the country.
North South University or NSU is the first private university of Bangladesh. The government of Bangladesh approved the establishment of North South University in 1992 under the Private University Act 1992. North-South University was established by a group of philanthropists, industrialists, bureaucrats, and academics.
The university’s campus is at Bashundhara in Dhaka. The foundation of the campus was laid on January 30, 2003, by Begum Khaleda Zia. Classes started in the permanent campus from June 9, 2009. This campus can serve up to 15,000 students with amenities and facilities. It contains six buildings with three basements on six acres of land having 665,000 square feet of floor space
BRAC University (BRACU) was established in 2001. It follows liberal arts approach to education, which nurtures fresh ideas and gives new impetus in the field of tertiary education. It ensures a high quality of education and aims to meet the demands of contemporary times.
Independent University, Bangladesh or IUB is one of the oldest, largest and finest private universities in Bangladesh. Its permanent campus is in Bashundhara R/A, Dhaka. The university was established in 1993 by the Private University Act, 1992.
Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology (AUST)
The Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology (AUST) was founded by the Dhaka Ahsania Mission in 1995. It maintains close collaboration with the University Grants Commission (UGC), Bangladesh and many other National and International Education Institutions and Professional bodies. The permanent campus of the University has been built on 5-bighas (1.6 acre) of land at Tejgaon Industrial Area, which is located in the heart of Dhaka City. The land use in this area is quickly changing from an industrial area to a commercial area.

United International University (UIU) is a private university located in Dhaka, Bangladesh, The government of Bangladesh approved the establishment of United International University in 2003 under the Private University Act -1992 (now replaced by-2010 ACT). Financial support came from the United Group, a Bangladeshi business conglomerate.
The University has two campuses in Dhaka, both located in Dhanmondi, Dhaka. The UIU main Campus is built with the purpose of imparting education in a befitting infrastructure and congenial environment. Containing about 80,000 sq. ft. floor space, the campus has 8 floors with two basements. With this capacity, UIU accommodates state-of-the-art IT and Computer Labs, Language Lab, different Engineering Labs and other essential facilities.

American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB)
American International University-Bangladesh is an accredited and renowned private university located at Banani in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
